About the Game

Clear the breakables: Throw Throw Burrito turns the living room into a dodgeball arena. Everyone draws and discards cards simultaneously, racing to collect sets of three, until someone plays a Burrito card and chaos erupts — players leap up, grab the squishy foam burritos and pelt each other. Collected sets earn points, but getting hit loses them, so ducking matters as much as matching.

The game suits 2–6 players, runs about 15 minutes, is light and simple to teach, and is recommended for ages 7 and up. Notable mechanics include real-time set collection, hand management and dexterity-driven battles, from table-wide Burrito Wars to back-to-back, three-pace duels.

Created by Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal and Elan Lee, and published by Exploding Kittens in 2019, Throw Throw Burrito was billed as the world's first dodgeball card game. It is a standalone game, so nothing else is needed to play.

History

Throw Throw Burrito was created by Matthew Inman, the cartoonist behind The Oatmeal, and game designer Elan Lee, the team who founded Exploding Kittens after their hugely successful card game of the same name. Published by Exploding Kittens in 2019, it was billed as the world's first dodgeball card game, taking the studio's trademark cheeky humour off the tabletop and into the room with two squishy foam burritos.

Rules of Throw Throw Burrito

  • Setup: clear breakables, put the foam burritos in the middle, shuffle the deck and deal starting hands; keep the remaining cards within reach.
  • No turns: everyone plays at once, passing cards around the table and picking up incoming cards to build three-of-a-kind.
  • Scoring sets: when you complete a matching set of three, place it in your score area and replenish your hand if cards remain.
  • Burrito sets: three matching Burrito battle cards trigger a battle; announce it and resolve it before card play resumes.
  • Battle basics: duels use back-to-back, three paces, turn and throw; Wars are table-wide. Non-combatants should keep clear.
  • Objective: bank as many scored sets as possible while avoiding hits, because being struck costs points.
  • Game end: when the cards can no longer keep play going, finish the current battle, then count set points minus hit penalties; highest score wins.

Strategy

  • Keep a brisk passing rhythm; holding out for one perfect card usually lets better sets slip past.
  • Pick one or two target sets and pass almost everything else, especially early while the deck is rich.
  • Watch what your neighbours keep sending you; it often reveals which sets are realistic to finish.
  • Decide quickly whether a Burrito set is worth the chaos: it can score and disrupt, but only if you are ready to dodge.
  • Before grabbing a burrito, check your footing and space; safe movement beats a heroic throw.
  • In battles, favour controlled throws and immediate ducking over wild power shots.
  • After a battle, restart passing at once while others are still settling down.
  • Late in the game, bank a completed set rather than risking extra passes for marginal upgrades; no single tip guarantees the win.

What a weird as game haha. Had a good bit of fun playing this with the family on holiday. Burritos are suuuper cute and squishy. Worth the purchase alone so you can squish them. Something different than your average boardgame that's for sure.

We purchased Throw Throw Burrito for my niece's 7th birthday with the idea that it would be a shared family gift. She really loves the burritos because she thinks they are cute and keeps one on her desk as an addition to her other squishy toys. She also really loves throwing them at her older brother. However, she could not keep up with the card game. I ended up being on her "team" and did all the card work. Eventually she started to help me draw cards, but she couldn't get into the speed of the game or quickly choose which card to discard. The cards are cute, and I think that makes her decisions a little tough, but also her personality is not the type to want to rush through things. Before putting a match of War cards down, I would show her so she would be prepared, and she would get excited that there would be a war. When it was our turn to grab a burrito, I would quickly grab it and give it to her to throw. So, she did enjoy the game, but could not fully play. Overall, based on my niece, who is a very sweet girl who is very smart and artistic, it wasn't really age-appropriate for her. I think she will be able to fully play next year when she is 8. I'm sure there are some 7-year-olds who could fully play, but this game was not my niece's cup of tea with her leisurely personality. Aside from that, the rest of the family loved the game. It's fun, fast, and fairly easy to get the hang of although we did watch a YouTube video on how to play. There is some degree of strategy you can implement to increase your chances of winning, but younger kids may not pick up on it. For example, the person to your right is discarding cards to you; if you notice that they usually discard certain cards, it may be worthwhile to start collecting those instead of whichever cards you were originally trying to collect. This is a great way to learn human behavior, and noticing what someone will do can be used to your advantage. All of the Exploding Kittens games are great, and this is no exception. It's clever and interesting when so many other games are just too similar or boring.

For the 6 years old I would recommend getting a card holder as it is hard for them to keep the 5 cards in their little hands. Strongly recommend this game

Dopo il tris di carte speciali inizia la sfida con il Burrito. Chi ha buttato il tris può scegliere chi sfidarsi. Poi ognuno può creare delle regole a piacere. A noi è piaciuto moltissimo.
