About the Game

Terra Mystica is a game of careful, luck-free territorial expansion. Each session sees you guiding one of 14 fantasy peoples — from swamp-dwelling Darklings to mountain-dwelling Engineers — terraforming neighbouring landscapes into your home terrain, raising dwellings, trading houses, temples and strongholds, and advancing along four cult tracks while jostling with adjacent rivals for space and power.

It plays 2–5 players in roughly 60–150 minutes, is recommended for ages 12 and up, and sits firmly in the heavy complexity range. Key mechanics include area majority, variable player powers, territory building and tech tracks, with proximity to opponents granting extra power but making expansion harder.

Designed by Jens Drögemüller and Helge Ostertag and first published by Feuerland Spiele in 2012, Terra Mystica won the 2013 Deutscher Spiele Preis. Its success spawned expansions including Fire & Ice and Merchants of the Seas, and it remains a benchmark of deep, deterministic euro-style strategy.

You have random setup (bonus tiles) and random choice of faction. This serves to provide a different game each time. 2 player plays a bit differently than 3 or 4 due to the fact that power actions are much more in demand. We love the game and it will be in our collection forever. The game is extremely tight (you need to take advantage of every opportunity), and some people don’t like that. There is very little random chance in this game.
