About the Game

Pick two fantasy factions, shuffle their decks together, and battle for control of a string of bases. Every pairing plays differently: swarming Halflings, sneaky Thieves and spell-slinging Mages each bring their own tricks, so you are always timing minion plays, springing actions and piling power onto a base just before it smashes to claim the biggest share of its points.

Smash Up: Munchkin plays with 2–4 players in about 45 minutes, at a medium-light complexity suited to ages 12 and up. Key mechanics include area majority, hand management, variable player powers and take-that card play.

Part of Alderac Entertainment Group's shufflebuilding Smash Up line, this standalone edition re-skins the formula with the comedic dungeon-crawling world of the Munchkin card game. Its eight factions – Clerics, Halflings, Orcs, Warriors, Elves, Thieves, Dwarves and Mages – can also be mixed with other Smash Up sets for even wilder combinations.

History

Smash Up, from Alderac Entertainment Group, coined the term “shufflebuilding”: each player mashes two twenty-card faction decks together, so every game features a fresh combination of powers. Smash Up: Munchkin carries that idea into the tongue-in-cheek dungeon-crawling world of the Munchkin card game, trading the series' usual pop-culture mash-ups for classic fantasy staples such as Warriors, Mages and Halflings while keeping the smash-the-base scoring at its core.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Smash Up (Munchkin)

  • Setup: Each player picks two of the eight factions, shuffles those two 20-card decks into one deck, and draws a hand of five cards.
  • Lay out one more base than there are players in the middle of the table; every base shows a breakpoint and victory points for first, second and third place.
  • On your turn: play up to one minion and one action from your hand, plus any extra plays your cards grant.
  • Minions add their power to the base they are played on; actions let you move minions, disrupt rivals, or bend the rules, so timing them matters.
  • After your plays, check each base: if the total power on a base meets or exceeds its breakpoint, it smashes and scores.
  • The player with the most power on a smashed base claims the first-place points, with second and third place taking the smaller rewards; all cards there are discarded and a fresh base replaces it.
  • Finish your turn by drawing two cards (ten-card hand limit), then play passes to the next player.
  • Game end: the first player to reach 15 victory points at the end of a turn wins; if several players cross the line together, the highest total takes it.

Strategy

  • Learn what each of your two factions does well — swarming Halflings, sneaky Thieves and spell-slinging Mages all play differently — and build your turns around how the pair complements each other.
  • Spread your power across bases rather than stacking one: threaten a smash in one spot while staying in contention for points elsewhere.
  • Watch breakpoints closely and time your biggest plays for when a base is close to smashing, before opponents can react.
  • Hold take-that actions until a base is about to score, where moving or removing a single minion can swing who claims first place.
  • Don't dismiss second place — the runner-up points are often better value than spending half your hand to wrestle for the top spot.
  • Chain extra minion and action plays when your cards allow it; a burst of plays can finish a base in a single turn.
  • Read each base's ability before committing, as some bases reward or punish particular plays when they smash.
  • Keep your hand moving — you only draw two cards per turn, so avoid sitting on cards you have no plan to play.
