About the Game

Rivals of Catan Deluxe drops two rivals onto newly settled Catan, each steering a faction from humble beginnings into a thriving principality. You'll roll the dice for resources, trade and spend cards to explore and settle new lands, expand settlements into cities, recruit heroes, and outmanoeuvre your opponent through politics, invention and intrigue until one of you is crowned prince of Catan.

Designed for 2 players, a typical game runs about 45–75 minutes, suits ages 10 and up, and sits at a medium complexity built on hand management, dice rolling, trading and card-driven development.

Part of the Catan family from Catan Studio, Rivals for Catan recasts the island contest as a dedicated two-player card duel, with each principality shaped by its own unique card mix. This Deluxe edition adds card trays to keep the card piles organised, along with nine hard-to-find promotional cards.

History

Part of the world-famous Catan family from Catan Studio, Rivals for Catan adapts the struggle for the island into a dedicated two-player card game, with each principality built from its own unique mix of cards. This Deluxe edition refines the experience with card trays that keep the different card piles organised, plus nine hard-to-find promotional cards for added variety.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Rivals of Catan (Deluxe)

  • Setup: Each player lays out a starting principality — two settlements joined by a road, ringed by six resource regions — then organise the draw stacks and event cards (the Deluxe card trays help) and take your starting resources and hand.
  • Roll the dice: On your turn, roll the production die and the event die. Resolve the event (brigands, trade bonuses, event cards and more), then every region whose number matches the production die gains one resource, up to three stored per region.
  • Take actions: Spend resources and cards to build roads and new settlements, upgrade settlements into cities, construct buildings, recruit heroes and other units, and play action cards.
  • Trade: Swap resources with your opponent or use trade options to fill gaps in what your regions produce.
  • Manage your hand: Draw and exchange cards to cycle through your faction's unique card mix and find the pieces your principality needs.
  • Score points: Settlements are worth 1 victory point, cities 2, with further points from certain cards and from holding the trade or strength advantage tokens.
  • Winning: The first player to reach 7 victory points is crowned prince of Catan and wins the game.

Strategy

  • Expand early: New settlements add victory points and let you place extra regions, so push out along roads before your opponent claims the best options.
  • Spread your numbers: Choose regions with varied production numbers so most die rolls earn you something rather than doubling up on the same roll.
  • Upgrade to cities: Cities are worth more points and unlock room for building expansions, so plan your resource income around an early upgrade.
  • Spend, don't hoard: Regions cap at three resources and brigand events can punish large stockpiles, so convert resources into cards and buildings promptly.
  • Cycle your cards: Use draw and exchange options regularly — digging for the right card is often better than waiting for it to appear.
  • Contest the tokens: Hero strength and trade presence decide who holds the advantage tokens, and each is worth a point, so don't concede them cheaply.
  • Use gold flexibly: Gold covers gaps in your production — save it for the resource you can never seem to roll.
  • Trade with care: Deals with your opponent should advance your plans more than theirs; watch what they're collecting before agreeing.

Best holiday game ever.

Mark Simmonds

We love Settlers of Catan but not a game to take when you are travelling on holidays or on the road. This is the solution. Love it.

Great game

I purchased this as an alternative way for my daughters to play Catan. Usually they play Catan in a group of 4, but this version is intended to be played with just 2 players. My daughters loved it.

We really like this game. It's fun, especially since my husband and I are more loners and aren't really the type to have lots of people over or anything. It's the perfect game for two people to play, and it was a great find since I had heard Settlers of Catan is a fun game from friends, but the traditional version of the game is designed for 4 or more players. The only setback is that the process of learning how to play took a while. We had to invest some decent time into reading the manual, and had to regularly refer back to it while we played. The game is also so complicated that they let you start on like a beginner version, and then you can amp up the difficulty and complexity with more cards and more aspects once you've got the hang of it. We've only played 2-3 times, the beginner version, but we had fun. I will admit that at some point at the beginning, I kind of felt exhausted by the amount of information needed to play and it started to feel not fun. However, we powered through and it ended up being worth it!

CATAN Rivals Deluxe is a fantastic card game that offers an exciting twist on the classic Catan board game. Whether you're a seasoned Catan player or new to the series, this game provides a fresh, engaging experience full of strategy and fun. The CATAN Rivals Deluxe edition comes beautifully packaged, with high-quality cards and components that feel durable and well-made. The design is sleek and modern, with an easy-to-follow setup that gets you into the game quickly. The rules are clear, and it’s evident that a lot of care went into making the game accessible while still maintaining the strategic depth that Catan is known for. In CATAN Rivals Deluxe, you build settlements, cities, and roads while managing resources and competing for control of the island. The card-based format works really well for a two-player experience and has the same exciting elements of trading, expanding, and developing that make Catan so beloved. What sets this edition apart is the ability to play in a head-to-head format, making it faster and more intense than the traditional board game. The deluxe edition includes additional expansion packs and features, adding more variety and replayability. It’s easy to adjust the difficulty, and the game offers a good balance of strategy, luck, and decision-making, ensuring that no two games feel the same. Pros: Great for two players, offering a deep and strategic experience. High-quality components and well-designed cards. Quick to set up and play, making it ideal for shorter game sessions. Offers plenty of replay value with expansion packs and customization options. Perfect for fans of Catan or those looking for a competitive, engaging card game. Cons: Best played with two players—while it can be played with more, it’s not as dynamic as the full Catan board game with a larger group. New players might need some time to get used to the rules and strategy, but once you’re familiar with it, the gameplay becomes smoother. The CATAN Rivals Deluxe edition is well worth the price, especially for fans of Catan looking for a card game version of the classic. The added expansions and customization options ensure that you’ll get plenty of enjoyment and long-term value out of the game. This game is perfect for two players who enjoy strategic card games and want a more portable, faster-paced version of Catan. It’s also a great choice for couples, friends, or anyone who loves the Catan series and wants to experience the game in a new format. Overall, I highly recommend CATAN Rivals Deluxe to anyone who enjoys strategic card games. It’s engaging, fun, and offers hours of entertainment. A must-have for Catan fans looking for a new challenge!
