In the classic strategy game Puerto Rico, 2 to 5 players take on the roles of colonial governors seeking to amass the most victory points. Over a playing time of 90 to 150 minutes, players aged 12 and up will engage in deep, medium-heavy strategic planning using role selection, action drafting, and careful resource management to build plantations and ship goods.

Key Gameplay and Distinctive Features

In each round, players take turns selecting from a pool of shared role cards, such as the Trader, Builder, or Mayor. When a role is selected, every player at the table gets to perform the associated action, but the player who chose the role receives a special privilege or discount. This elegant role-selection mechanism forces players to constantly weigh whether an action will benefit them more than their opponents.

To succeed, players must establish a thriving resource cycle: cultivating crops, manning plantations and buildings with colonists, and exchanging those goods for doubloons or victory points. Doubloons are reinvested into constructing city buildings, which grant powerful special abilities or increase production efficiency. Furthermore, players keep their acquired shipping chips face down, adding a layer of hidden scoring that heightens the tension as the endgame approaches.

Game History and Editions

First released in the early 2000s, Puerto Rico quickly established itself as a landmark design in modern board gaming, renowned for its innovative variable phase order mechanism. Over the years, various editions have been released, some extending the player count to support a dedicated two-player variant, while other releases have bundled expansions such as the New Buildings and Nobles expansions.

Please note that this edition contains the core game. Depending on the version, it may support 2 to 5 players and include rules for two-player variants. It does not include the New Buildings or Nobles expansions, which are featured in separate expanded editions of the game.
