About the Game

Step into the heyday of Norway's Lofoten archipelago, where sailing ships crowd the fjord and rival fishing companies race to build the finest harbour. Each round you'll place your three workers to clear forests, buy cutters, erect buildings and haul in cod — but money is tight, and selling shares in your own company brings quick cash at the risk of letting rivals profit from your catch, while the village elders expect their share too.

Nusfjord plays with 1–5 players over roughly 60–120 minutes. A medium-heavy strategy game recommended for ages 12+, it pairs worker placement with set collection and a distinctive shareholding system.

Designed by Uwe Rosenberg and published by Lookout Games in 2017, Nusfjord carries the spirit of his acclaimed worker placement classics Agricola and Ora et Labora, trading their fields and monasteries for the cod-rich waters of northern Norway.

History

Designed by Uwe Rosenberg and released by Lookout Games in 2017, Nusfjord follows in the worker placement tradition of his earlier hits Agricola and Ora et Labora. Its setting is the real village of Nusfjord in the Lofoten archipelago, once a thriving cod-fishing hub and today a carefully preserved museum village of fewer than a hundred residents.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Nusfjord Big Box

  • Set up: prepare the main board, building supply and share area for your player count; give each player a company board, three workers and the starting cash/material shown in the rules.
  • Round flow: place workers one at a time on open action spaces, then resolve those actions.
  • Actions let you clear forest for wood, gain money, buy cutters, erect buildings and improve your ability to haul in cod.
  • Clearing forest also opens room on your company board, so early wood income often enables later buildings.
  • If short of cash, you may sell shares in your own company; shares held by rivals can let them profit from your future catches.
  • Keep some cod available for the village elders’ expected share before spending the catch elsewhere.
  • Goal and end: build the most valuable harbour through boats, buildings and sets while staying solvent; when the round track is completed, finish the final upkeep and score as the rules direct, with the highest score winning.

Strategy

  • Prioritise early wood and forest clearing so later building sites and timber costs do not stall your plan.
  • Add a cutter when it clearly improves your catch over several rounds, not just because you can afford one now.
  • Treat share sales as targeted funding: sell only when the money buys a specific boat, building or timely action.
  • Budget cod for the elders first; being caught short can force worse choices later.
  • Watch rivals’ likely worker needs and consider taking a key space when blocking it beats gaining a marginal resource.
  • Favour buildings that fit your current fleet and cash flow rather than chasing every possible set.
  • Hold a small cash buffer so one poor round does not push you into extra share sales or missed obligations.
