About the Game

Crack packs, pick a card and pass the rest — a Modern Horizons 2 draft is a high-powered Limited experience, with every player building a deck from one of Magic's most nostalgia-loaded sets. This display contains 36 Draft Boosters, enough to draft with up to 12 players (eight makes the classic pod), and a full draft event typically runs two to three hours. Magic is a deep, complex game recommended for ages 13+. Each pack guarantees one new-to-Modern reprint plus 1–2 rares or mythic rares. Released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 as the follow-up to 2019's Modern Horizons, the set feeds powerful new cards and beloved reprints straight into the Modern format, full of throwback characters and special card treatments. These are Draft Boosters, configured for Limited play — unlike Set Boosters, which are tuned for opening rather than drafting.

History

Magic: The Gathering was created by Richard Garfield and released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, becoming the first trading card game of its kind, with the Modern format drawing on cards from across the game's long history.

Modern Horizons 2, released in 2021, is the follow-up to 2019's Modern Horizons — a special series that introduces powerful new cards and sought-after reprints directly into Modern, this time leaning into classic characters, throwback charm and special card treatments.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Magic the Gathering Modern Horizons 2 Draft Boosters (36 Boosters Per Display)

  • Set up the pod: Gather up to 12 players (eight is the classic pod) and give each player three Draft Boosters from the display. Allow roughly two to three hours for the full event.
  • Draft the cards: Everyone opens one booster, secretly picks a single card, and passes the rest to the left. Repeat until the packs are empty, then do the same with the next two boosters, reversing the pass direction each round.
  • Build your deck: Construct a deck of at least 40 cards using only what you drafted, plus as many basic lands as you need — around 17 lands and 23 spells is the usual split.
  • Play matches: Pair off and play games of Magic, typically best-of-three. Each player starts at 20 life and draws a hand of seven cards.
  • Take turns: On your turn, untap your cards, draw a card, play up to one land, and spend mana to cast creatures and spells. Attack with creatures to damage your opponent or force them to block.
  • Win the game: Reduce your opponent to zero life, or win if they must draw a card from an empty library.
  • Finish the event: After the set number of rounds (usually three), the draft is over — every player keeps the cards they drafted.

Strategy

  • Stay open early: Take the strongest card in each of your first few picks rather than locking into colours straight away, then settle into whichever colours keep flowing to you.
  • Stick to two colours: A consistent two-colour mana base is far more reliable for a new drafter than stretching to fit a flashy third colour.
  • Value removal highly: Cards that destroy, counter or otherwise answer opposing creatures are premium picks — Modern Horizons 2 is powerful, and you will need answers.
  • Mind your mana curve: Draft enough cheap creatures and spells so you have plays in the opening turns, not just expensive finishers.
  • Don't chase rares: A common that fits your deck's plan is usually a better pick than a rare you'll never cast. Only 23 or so of your picks make the final deck.
  • Read the signals: If strong cards in one colour keep arriving late in a pack, that colour is probably open — moving into it can pay off in later packs.
  • Count your playables: Before building, check you have roughly 23 worthwhile spells; if you're short on creatures, prioritise them in the remaining packs.
  • Sideboard between games: In best-of-three matches, swap in answers from your leftover drafted cards once you've seen what your opponent is playing.
