About the Game

A typical game of Magic Maze is a frantic, mostly silent scramble: four heroes must explore a shopping mall, steal their gear and escape together, but each player can perform only one specific action — moving north, riding escalators, revealing new tiles — for every hero. With talking banned for most of the round, you'll be gesturing and slamming the attention pawn while the sand timer drains away.

Magic Maze plays 1–8 players in about 15 minutes. It's a light, family-friendly game recommended for ages 8 and up, built around real-time cooperative play, communication limits, modular tile exploration and shared grid movement.

Designed by Kasper Lapp and published by Sit Down! in 2017, Magic Maze earned a Spiel des Jahres nomination and became a modern party favourite, later inspiring the Maximum Security expansion and Magic Maze Kids.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Magic Maze

  • Setup: Place the starting mall tile in the centre with the four hero pawns on it, shuffle the remaining tiles into a deck, and give each player one or more action tiles (move north, move south, explore, escalators, portals, and so on).
  • Shared heroes: There are no turns. Play happens in real time, and any player may use their assigned action on any hero at any moment.
  • Stay silent: Talking is banned for most of the game. Signal teammates by pointing or placing the attention pawn in front of the player you need to act.
  • Explore the mall: When a hero stands on an arrow space, the player holding the explore action draws and connects a new tile, expanding the mall.
  • Flip the timer: When a hero reaches an hourglass space, flip the sand timer. Players may talk freely until the next pawn is moved.
  • Steal the gear: Guide each hero to the shop marked with their colour. Once all four heroes sit on their item spaces at the same time, they grab their equipment.
  • Escape to win: After the theft, move all four heroes to the exit before the sand runs out. Heroes carrying items cannot use portals, so everyone escapes together or the whole group loses.

Strategy

  • Start with the introductory scenario, which uses fewer tiles and rules, before tackling the later setups.
  • Before anyone moves, check which action tiles each player holds so you know who can do what.
  • Use the attention pawn deliberately: place it in front of the one player you need rather than waving it at the whole table.
  • Flip the sand timer as soon as a hero lands on an hourglass space, and spend the short talking window agreeing the next few moves.
  • Prioritise exploring early so the shops and exit are revealed with plenty of time to spare.
  • Steer each hero toward their own coloured shop instead of shuttling a single pawn back and forth.
  • Plan exit routes before the theft, since heroes carrying items can no longer teleport through portals.
  • Keep one eye on the sand — a nearly empty timer matters more than perfect positioning.

Great collaborative game. Simple concept, complex game.

Sarah Polmear

This is a great game. The concept is simple enough to understand, and it is easy to learn. As you add more tiles, or play with more players it gets more difficult. Great collaborative game, would recommend!

Entertaining

EC

An entertaining game. The game is easy enough to understand. However, not being able to speak is definitely pretty difficult and can lead to some tension between players. However, with the right players and enough practice, it is an enjoyable game.
