In the strategy board game Lords of Waterdeep, 2–5 players step into the roles of masked rulers vying for control of the City of Splendours. Designed for players aged 12 and up, this medium-light strategy game takes approximately 60–90 minutes to play and showcases classic worker placement and set collection mechanics as players recruit adventurers and construct influential new buildings.
Conspire, Recruit, and Build
As one of the secret Lords of Waterdeep, you will send agents throughout the city to recruit fighters, clerics, rogues, and wizards to undertake dangerous quests on your behalf. Completing these quests earns you victory points and valuable resources, expanding your influence over the city's factions. Players can also purchase and construct new buildings, which not only open up fresh action spaces on the board but also provide you with bonuses whenever your opponents utilise them.
Intrigue cards add a layer of direct interaction, allowing you to aid your plans or directly hinder your rivals. After eight rounds of tense political manoeuvring and strategic placement, the player who has accumulated the most points is crowned the true ruler of the city.
A Rich Fantasy Legacy
Set in the iconic city of Waterdeep from the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting, Lords of Waterdeep was published by Wizards of the Coast. It has earned a reputation as one of the most accessible and celebrated modern gateway strategy games, successfully blending thematic fantasy elements with streamlined Eurogame mechanics.
