About the Game

Take to the black with the crew of Serenity. In Legendary Encounters: Firefly, players cooperate to complete objectives drawn from episodes of the Firefly TV series, building their decks, coordinating tactics and upgrading their ship while keeping Serenity from taking too many ship strikes. Each game features five Main Characters and four Supporting Characters, so all nine crew members take part, with the supporting stacks shuffled together into a shared Crew Deck.

Designed for 1–5 players, games typically run 60–90 minutes. This is a medium-complexity game suited to ages 14 and up, built around deck building, cooperative play and variable player powers.

Published by Upper Deck Entertainment, this is a standalone entry in the Legendary Encounters series, adapting that deck-building system to the Firefly universe. It is not an expansion: the box contains everything needed to play, including 500 cards and a roll-up playmat.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Legendary Encounters Firefly

  • Setup: Choose an episode to play, then each player selects a Main Character. Shuffle the four Supporting Character stacks together into a shared Crew Deck and lay out the playmat and episode cards as the setup directs.
  • Starting decks: Each player begins with a small personal deck of basic cards that generate the points used to recruit and fight.
  • On your turn: Play cards from your hand to generate recruit points and combat strength, recruit new cards from the shared card row to improve your deck, and fight threats before they harm the crew or Serenity.
  • Work together: This is fully cooperative, so discuss plans each turn and combine your crews' abilities to handle what the episode throws at you.
  • Objectives: Each episode sets out objectives you must complete as a team, drawn from stories in the Firefly TV series.
  • Ship strikes: Threats left unanswered cause strikes against Serenity. Track these carefully throughout the game.
  • Ending the game: The crew wins by completing all of the episode's objectives. The crew loses if Serenity takes too many ship strikes first.
  • Wrap-up: After each turn, discard played cards and draw back up to your hand size, ready for the next round.

Strategy

  • Talk every turn: Cooperation is the core of the game. Share what you can recruit or fight before committing, so the team wastes nothing.
  • Recruit with purpose: Early on, favour cards that strengthen your deck's economy or combat, rather than grabbing everything available. A focused deck performs better than a bloated one.
  • Watch the threats: Deal with dangers before they accumulate into ship strikes. Preventing strikes is usually cheaper than surviving them.
  • Lean on your character: Each Main and Supporting Character has distinct strengths. Play to what your crew member does best and let others cover your gaps.
  • Use the shared Crew Deck: Supporting Characters benefit everyone, so time their recruitment for when the team can use them most.
  • Keep objectives in sight: Fighting threats matters, but only completing the episode's objectives wins the game. Balance defence with progress.
  • Don't chase a perfect plan: Card draws and threats vary each game, so adapt your tactics turn by turn rather than locking into one approach.
