I-Go Game is a portable Go set for 2 players, recommended for ages 6 and up. With simple rules, medium-heavy strategic depth and sessions typically running 20–90 minutes, it delivers the timeless contest of territory and capture wherever you are.

About the Game

I-Go Game brings the ancient game of Go to your table. A typical game sees two players taking turns placing black and white stones on the vacant intersections of the board, steadily fencing off territory while watching for chances to surround and capture rival groups. Although the rules can be learned in minutes, every placement carries real weight, and a single clever move can decide the outcome. Built for 2 players, sessions typically run 20–90 minutes depending on experience, offering medium-heavy strategic depth recommended for ages 6 and up. Notable mechanics include area majority, enclosure and grid coverage. Go originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game played continuously to the present day. Exquisite and easy to carry, this set lets you take on the challenge anytime, anywhere. Please note: contains small parts.

Watch: How to play

Rules of I-Go Game

  • Setup: Start with an empty grid board. One player takes black stones, the other white; Black plays first.
  • Turn flow: On your turn, place one stone on any vacant intersection, then pass play to your opponent. Stones do not move once placed.
  • Liberties: A stone or connected group stays on the board while it has at least one empty adjacent point (liberty).
  • Capturing: Fill the last liberty of an enemy group to remove those stones from the board and keep them as captures.
  • Passing: You may pass instead of placing a stone when no move benefits you.
  • Objective: Fence off and control more territory (empty intersections you surround) than your opponent.
  • Game end: When both players pass consecutively, the game ends; count your surrounded territory plus captured stones, and the higher total wins.

Strategy

  • Start in the corners: Territory is easiest to enclose near corners and edges, where the board border does part of the work.
  • Play big early: Use your opening moves to claim open areas rather than fighting over small skirmishes.
  • Watch liberties: Regularly check that your groups have room to grow and are not one move from capture.
  • Stay connected: Linking your stones makes them stronger and harder to surround than scattered single stones.
  • Don't chase every capture: Sometimes letting a weak enemy group live is fine if you gain more territory elsewhere.
  • Defend before attacking: Secure your own territory and vulnerable groups before spending moves on invasions.
  • Know when to pass: Once the board is settled, adding stones inside your own territory only costs you points.
