About the Game

Game night with Wingspan feels effortless when every component has its place. A typical session begins with trays lifting straight from the box to the table — bird cards, food tokens, eggs and dice all within reach — and ends with pack-away in minutes. Designed for Wingspan, a medium-light engine-builder for 1–5 players aged 10+, usually playing in 40–70 minutes, with card drafting, set collection and dice rolling at its heart.

Wingspan was designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games in 2019, followed by the European and Oceania expansions. This V2 insert holds the base game plus both expansions in one box, with trays arranged in up to three layers; the rules and boards form a lid on top. The ten wooden dice store inside the dice tower, the trays also work with GeekUp plastic food tokens, and there is space for one set of five player boards.

History

Wingspan, designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games in 2019, won the Kennerspiel des Jahres and was followed by the European and Oceania expansions. Folded Space specialises in self-assembly board game organisers; this V2 insert accommodates the base game together with both expansions in a single box.

Rules of Folded Space Game Inserts - Wingspan V2

Set up: Give each player a habitat board, eight eggs in their colour, five food tokens and five bird cards. Players secretly keep any number of bird cards, discarding one food per bird kept, then keep one of two dealt bonus cards.
Shared setup: Place the bird tray face up, shuffle the deck, set the dice in the birdfeeder, and reveal a random end-of-round goal for each of the four rounds.
Your board: The three habitat rows are forest (gain food), grassland (lay eggs) and wetland (draw bird cards). Each row gets stronger as you fill it with birds.
On your turn: Take one action cube and either play a bird from your hand or activate one habitat row, then move the cube left-to-right along that row to gain its rewards.
Playing a bird: Pay its food cost plus any egg cost shown on the column, then place it in the leftmost empty slot of a matching habitat. Brown powers trigger when activated; pink powers trigger between turns.
Round structure: Round one gives each player eight turns; each later round gives one fewer turn as cubes are spent on scoring end-of-round goals.
End of round: Compare your result against the round goal, place a cube on the goal board, refill the bird tray if needed and reroll the dice.
Game end: After four rounds, total your points from bird values, bonus cards, end-of-round goals, eggs on birds, cached food and tucked cards. Highest score wins.

Strategy

Build an engine early: In the first round or two, favour birds with useful habitat powers so later turns generate more food, eggs or cards automatically.
Focus your rows: Filling one or two habitats quickly is usually better than spreading thin, since each extra bird makes that row's action more rewarding.
Don't hoard food: Food is a means to an end. Spending it to get birds on the table early tends to pay off more than a full supply.
Respect eggs: Eggs are worth a point each at game end, so the grassland row is rarely wasted, especially in later rounds.
Play to your bonus card: When drawing birds, prefer ones that satisfy your bonus card conditions for easy end-game points.
Watch the round goals: A single cube on a round goal can be worth several points; check what's coming and position yourself a round ahead.
Value tucking and caching: Cards tucked or food cached by bird powers each score a point, so these abilities quietly add up.
Stay flexible: No single plan guarantees a win. Adapt to the birds, dice and goals you're offered rather than forcing a favourite strategy.

The inserts come flat packs in foam sheets and are pretty easy to assemble. Glue is not required but strongly recommended. The foam is sturdy and shouldn't bend easily in the box or in play. Some of the narrow trays for food and action cubes can be a little hard to get into, especially if the tray isn't glued. The inserts all fit nicely into the base set box with room for the dice tower. Unfortunately they stack a bit high and fitting one set of boards (not both the base and Oceanic sets), rulebooks, and a scoring pad leaves them a bit above the rim of the box. The bird tray(s), of course, won't fit, so they'll have to be carried separately or just reserve an area while playing. Given the alternatives I'm quite happy with them, especially for the price. They should tide us over well until Stonemaier releases the nesting box and solves storage issues for good.

This is a good idea for a product, but you have to glue the pieces together or it will collapse and spill everything. I bought this because we got a couple expansions for Christmas and thought I’d need some storage support. The storage pieces that comes with the game, especially the European expansion, work just as well as this product and you won’t have to glue them together. Don’t waste your money or find something less brittle.

Organization is amazing

I absolutely love having this to store the base game and expansions in one box. The setup is pretty easy and sturdy. May need some glue to hold some pieces together if you use them like I do when playing the game. Otherwise a very good product.
