About the Game

Game night with War of the Ring: Second Edition runs far more smoothly when every piece has its place. This Folded Space insert organises the base game together with the Lords of Middle-Earth and Warriors of Middle-Earth expansions in a single box, and many of the trays can be used at the table during play, greatly cutting set-up and clear-away times. As a storage accessory it has no player count, play time, complexity rating or age recommendation of its own; those follow the host game, a sweeping strategy title. The insert is arranged in up to three layers, with a large card tray at one end of the box, while the board and rule books rest on top of the trays to form a lid. Folded Space designs lightweight, affordable organisers for popular board games, and this edition was tailored precisely to the second edition of War of the Ring and its expansions.

History

Folded Space produces a range of lightweight board-game inserts designed to store components efficiently while improving game play. This insert was created specifically for War of the Ring: Second Edition, with room for the Lords of Middle-Earth and Warriors of Middle-Earth expansions in the same box. The trays are arranged in up to three layers, with a large card tray at one end, and the game board and rule books sit on top of the trays to act as a lid.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Folded Space Game Inserts - War of the Ring 2nd Ed

  • Choose sides: one player commands the Free Peoples and the other the Shadow Armies, with team rules available for more players.
  • Setup: unfold the Middle-earth board, place each nation's starting forces from the setup charts, form the Fellowship in Rivendell, and give each side its action dice and event decks. The insert's trays can go straight to the table to speed this up.
  • Start of round: both players draw event cards, the Shadow assigns dice to the hunt box, then everyone rolls their action dice.
  • Take actions: alternate spending action dice to muster troops, move armies, play event cards, or advance the Fellowship; Shadow Eye results are lost to the hunt box.
  • Hunt the Ring: the Fellowship moves in secret, and the Shadow draws hunt tiles to try to reveal it or add corruption to the Ring-bearer.
  • Mind politics: nations must be brought to war on the political track before their armies can march, so plan muster actions in advance.
  • Winning: the Shadow wins by taking 10 victory points of settlements or pushing the Ring-bearer to 12 corruption; the Free Peoples win by destroying the Ring in Mordor or capturing 4 victory points of Shadow settlements.
  • Game end: play stops as soon as any victory condition is met, so check the board state at the end of each round.

Strategy

  • There is no single winning line, so treat these as sensible starting habits and adapt to your dice and cards.
  • Free Peoples: keep the Fellowship moving most turns; the Ring is usually your clearest path to victory.
  • Free Peoples: spend early muster actions bringing nations to war so their armies can move and defend before the Shadow arrives.
  • Shadow: place one or two dice in the hunt box for steady pressure, but do not starve your conquest of actions.
  • Garrison key strongholds rather than fighting everywhere; sieges favour a prepared defender.
  • Consider separating a companion to lead armies, but weigh the benefit against leaving the Fellowship exposed.
  • Manage corruption carefully: declare the Fellowship in a friendly settlement when it is safe to heal.
  • Watch both sides' victory-point totals from mid-game on so a sudden military win does not catch you off guard.

Good insert, but may not work well with miniatures attached with colored ring base

Pretty decent insert. But one thing to beware of: If you had outfitted your miniatures with the colored ring base product (to make identifying the armies easier), you may find it slightly difficult to make everything fit nicely. This is because this storage solution assumes you didn't modify the miniatures with the colored ring base product, so do take that into acccount.

Pretty good

It leaves the box slightly ajar, but overall pretty good.
