Rules of Folded Space Game Inserts - Gloomhaven

  • Storage note: this insert changes no rules; use the trays to sort map tiles, standees, monster cards, tokens and sleeved cards for faster setup and pack-down.
  • Setup: choose a scenario, follow the scenario book for the starting room, place tiles, terrain, monster standees, character figures and required tokens, then give each player their hand limit, attack modifier deck, items and battle goal if used.
  • Card selection: each round, secretly choose two ability cards and set one as the leading card for initiative; monsters reveal ability cards for each type present.
  • Turn flow: act in initiative order; on a hero turn, play the top action of one chosen card and the bottom action of the other, then place both in discard or lost piles as instructed.
  • Monster turns: each monster type follows its drawn ability card and normal focus rules, so expect movement, attacks and effects to target the most logical enemies.
  • Objective: complete the scenario goal stated in the book while managing hit points and avoiding exhaustion from damage or an unsustainable card supply.
  • Ending: a scenario ends when the goal is achieved, the party fails or exhausts, or scenario text says otherwise; record rewards and campaign updates, then continue linked scenarios over many sessions.

Strategy

  • Pick cards as a pair: before locking in, check that the two chosen actions give you a useful top action, bottom action and initiative for the coming round.
  • Protect your card pool: lost cards shorten your scenario life, so avoid spending powerful loss actions unless the payoff is clearly worth it.
  • Coordinate initiative: talk about likely speeds so heals, controls and big attacks land in a sensible order rather than surprising your allies.
  • Focus fire: removing one dangerous monster usually beats spreading damage across several, especially before it gets another activation.
  • Use positioning: doors, choke points, pushes, pulls, traps and line of sight can reduce incoming attacks without needing perfect rolls.
  • Value control effects: stun, muddle, immobilize, curse and forced movement can save more health than a small amount of extra damage.
  • Balance greed and safety: coins, treasure and experience matter, but opening a new room or chasing loot while wounded can end a scenario early.

Actually fits Gloomhaven

Gloomhaven barely fits back in the box, but with this organiser not only does it fit well, it makes setup so much quicker and simpler that the game hits the table more often. Takes awhile to build, but thats expected of something with this many parts.

We were late to Gloomhaven, but when it arrived we were shocked at just how much stuff there is in the box (cards, standees, map tiles, tokens). Initially tried to bag all the components but it was all taking so long to set up and put away, another solution had to be found! This organiser is superb. It comes flatpacked, 10 sheets, 5 different pages with two of each. I used a wood PVA glue as recommended on the foldedspace.net website, and a flat brush to apply. As there are two copies of each tray in the set, the best way to tackle this is to dry build one tray to see where all the glue needs to go, and then build the second one using the PVA glue.. Finally disassemble and reassemble the first of the two trays, this time using glue. Some of the trays are initially a little fiddly to construct, but the designs end up becoming excellent sturdy trays. The design of the whole organiser is excellent, a space is provided for everything, even down to smaller sections for monsters which only have 4 standees, and larger sections for monsters that have 10 standees. What is fabulous is that there is also a diagram to show you how to stack everything back in the box. and (once you take out the original plastic and foam inserts) everything fits in perfectly and the lid shuts! The organiser makes everything easier to find, you can bring the trays straight to the game table, so setting up (and putting away) takes half the time. Although it's not cheap, it definitely makes playing Gloomhaven easier - highly recommended!
