About the Game

Claim the throne of the deep in Abyss, a card game of undersea intrigue where you recruit allies, win the favour of powerful lords and control key locations, then keep every piece neatly organised with this Folded Space insert. Abyss suits 2–4 players aged 14+, plays in around 30–60 minutes, and offers medium-light rules built on card drafting, set collection and push-your-luck exploration.

The insert is compatible with Abyss and the Leviathan and Kraken expansions, storing everything in the base game box. Many trays can be used during play to speed set-up and pack-away, and they are arranged in up to three layers, with the rules and boards acting as a lid. Location tiles sit in a single stack on top, held in place by two filler trays.

Abyss was designed by Bruno Cathala and Charles Chevallier and published by Bombyx in 2014. This is a storage accessory only; the game and expansions are sold separately.

History

Abyss was designed by Bruno Cathala and Charles Chevallier and published by Bombyx in 2014, later joined by the Leviathan and Kraken expansions. This product is a third-party storage accessory from Folded Space rather than a game or expansion itself, sized to hold the base game and both expansions together in the original box.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Folded Space Game Inserts - Abyss

  • Setup: Lay out the board, shuffle the exploration deck and reveal the available lords; the insert's trays can hold cards and tokens within easy reach during play.
  • On your turn, choose one of three actions: Explore the depths, request support from the Council, or recruit a Lord.
  • Explore: Reveal ally cards one at a time, push your luck for a better draw, and buy one with pearls before rivals claim the revealed bargains.
  • Council: Take a stack of ally cards from the council to build up the colour sets you need for recruiting lords.
  • Recruit a Lord: Spend ally cards matching a lord's colour and value requirements to gain influence points, a special power, and sometimes a key.
  • Collect three keys from recruited lords to claim a location tile, which scores bonus points based on your gathered allies.
  • The game ends when a player recruits their seventh lord; finish the round, then tally influence points from lords, locations and monster rewards — the highest total wins.

Strategy

  • Balance the safe Council option (steady colour sets) against Explore (riskier, but can earn pearls when rivals buy your revealed cards).
  • Check which lords are on offer early and start collecting the ally colours they need before your opponents do.
  • Keep a few pearls in reserve so you can afford a key ally or lord when the right moment comes.
  • Lords that grant keys are often worth prioritising, as location tiles can swing the final score toward your biggest ally sets.
  • Match location tiles to the ally colours you have collected most, rather than chasing every colour at once.
  • Watch opponents' sets so you can judge when to race for a contested lord instead of building slowly.
  • Don't dismiss monster rewards from exploration — small point gains add up by game's end.
