About the Game

A visit to the Florence Natural History Museum is derailed when an incredible adventure leaves you trapped inside, and the only way out is to unravel the museum's mysteries. Working together, you'll solve a series of riddles and puzzles, crack codes and combine clues — folding, marking and tearing the game materials themselves to reach each solution.

Exit: The Mysterious Museum is a cooperative deduction game for 1–4 players, aged 10 and up, that plays in one to two hours. With a difficulty rating of 2 out of 5, it's an approachable entry point for families and newcomers, and no app is required: every riddle, clue and hint is included in the box.

The game is part of KOSMOS's Exit: The Game series by Inka and Markus Brand, winners of the 2017 Kennerspiel des Jahres. Each Exit title is a standalone, one-time adventure with its own setting and difficulty, so this museum mystery can be enjoyed entirely on its own.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Exit - The Mysterious Museum

  • Set up: Place the riddle book, answer disk, hint cards and any riddle cards or unusual items on the table. Do not read ahead or peek at cards before they are called for.
  • Explore the book: Read the introduction aloud, then examine the museum booklet pages together for symbols, codes and odd details.
  • Solve each riddle: Combine clues from the booklet, cards and items. Some puzzles ask you to fold, mark or tear the materials, so this is a one-time adventure.
  • Check answers: Dial the three-symbol solution into the answer disk, then look up the matching answer card to confirm whether you are correct and reveal what happens next.
  • Use hints when stuck: Each riddle has hint cards that escalate from a nudge to the full solution, so you are never permanently blocked.
  • Win the game: Solve all the museum's riddles to escape. Your final score depends on how long you took and how many hint cards you used.

Strategy

  • Lay everything out: Spread all revealed cards and items where everyone can see them so no clue gets overlooked.
  • Share discoveries aloud: Describe strange symbols, numbers and patterns as you find them; another player may connect them to a different clue.
  • Don't fear the hints: Using a hint card early usually beats twenty minutes of frustration, and at difficulty 2 of 5 the game is designed for a relaxed solve.
  • Be willing to destroy things: If a puzzle feels impossible, consider whether folding, cutting or writing on a component is part of the intended solution.
  • Divide and conquer: With 3–4 players, let different people study different pages or cards, then regroup to test ideas together.
  • Check before you dial: Random guesses on the answer disk waste time and hurt your final score, so agree on a solution as a group first.
  • Keep used materials: Even solved components sometimes matter later, so don't discard anything until the game is over.

The mysterious Museum is a very good starter game for Exit games. Easy to follow we had to use a few clues, we don’t worry about keeping to the time schedule as we just are enjoying the puzzles. However the abandoned cabin is tricky in the it jumps sequence in solving the puzzles to the point where we thought we’d lost a piece or had screwed up somewhere. Once you figure out that out, all is good!

We actually bought this as a birthday present but, we have played it before. It is NOT an easy game and is certainly not for a beginner. That said it did keep us entertained for a few days. There is a lot of lateral thinking needed and that is as much as I will say about the game play. We actually did cheat somewhat regarding the single use element of the game as there are pieces of the game which need to be cut up so we actually photocopied them using the copies instead of the original game cards to be cut and it worked, so we can now hand this game over to others to play at no extra cost to them.

We found the book way too small to play at a table with 4 people. Some of the steps are kind of impossible without the extra clues. Maybe for people who play this kind of games they are obvious, but it was our first exit game. I'd definitely make the book bigger for that more players can see what's in there.

I bought this for one of my sons as a Christmas present and we loved it! It took our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children aged 13 and 12) 1 hour and 20 minutes to solve, with some hints and 1 solution card used on the way. It’s very similar to a real Escape Room where you have to often think laterally or look at things in a different way. The clues were creative and just challenging enough to keep us guessing without having us get discouraged. We have the Lab one as well (Christmas present for our other son) and look forward to playing that one too!

We’ve done live escape rooms before and like logic problems, but we are by no means brainiacs. I bought this for date night with my husband. It’s our FIRST ‘at the table’ escape room so we had no idea what to expect. It took the two of us 3.5 hours with one clue and we only took it because at the time we convinced ourselves that there was some sort of error (there was NOT, by the way... the game is flawless). Even with the clue we weren’t getting it so we had to take the answer. We totally understood it (it was actually something we had tried) but we still weren’t seeing it. Later we had an “ah-ha!” moment and I decided the seeming error was one of the best riddles - super funny to me, but mostly because I felt like a dumb-head, which is fine. Well played, game makers. Well played. Technically it’s a one-time and done game, BUT my intention was to pass it along to our friends and I feel like we were successfully able to do that. The only real alterations they got from us (no spoilers) was that we folded something that obviously had to folded and cut two things that obviously had to be cut. Everything else that required cutting and/or tearing we could figure out without defacing the game. It’s also very simple to reset the cards for the next players. But WE can’t play it again as the riddles do not change. How many players: One could do it. Two is perfect. Any more, though and I don’t see how everyone could be doing something. Sometimes there is stuff to pass around or look at but since only one thing is going on at any given time, each of us needed to look at the same thing simultaneously. Caveat: Everything is surprisingly small (even the box). Some of the cards took effort to read because the writing was very small. I got my bifocals a couple times, but fortunately my husband’s younger eyes could see them better. I imagined it would take 2 hours, but as I mentioned it actually took us 3.5. We feel like you could stop the timer before the next riddle and easily walk away and return to the game another day if you wanted to. Next time we will probably do that. Personally, I didn’t mind the time, though - it’s refreshing to do something that doesn’t require electronics and keeps you engaged. My husband is slow and methodical. Personally, I am impatient and frustrate easily, BUT I wanted this game and went into it with a good attitude and sort of knew what to expect. I LOVED IT. However, if you cannot quell your impatience, or tend to give up easily, this game may not be for you. Move on. If you like the escape room concept: BUY. THIS. GAME. ! I have another in this series coming. It claims to be more difficult, so we’ll see!
