About the Game

Gather twigs, resin, pebbles and berries as you lead a band of forest critters founding a new city in the charming valley of Everdell. Each turn you will place workers on board locations to collect resources and draw cards, play Construction and Critter cards into a personal tableau of up to fifteen cards, then recall your workers as the seasons advance from winter to the following winter's onset, when the most prosperous city wins.

Everdell plays with 1–4 players in roughly 40–80 minutes. It is a medium-complexity game recommended for ages 13 and up, combining worker placement, tableau building and card drafting with delightful woodland artwork.

Designed by James A. Wilson and published by Starling Games in 2018, Everdell became a modern favourite of family strategy gaming and has since grown into a much-expanded series. This Emerald Collector's Edition is a collector's release of the original game, offering the same beloved gameplay.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Everdell (Emerland Collector's Edition)

  • Setup: Place the main board with its worker locations, shuffle the card deck, deal each player a starting hand, and give everyone their critter workers (fewer workers at the start, more gained as seasons advance).
  • Goal: Build the most prosperous 15-card city of Construction and Critter cards; the highest point total when the game ends wins.
  • On your turn, take one action: place a worker on a board location to gain resources (twigs, resin, pebbles, berries) or cards, or play a card from your hand into your city by paying its resource cost, or pass into the next season.
  • Many Critter cards can be played for free if the matching Construction is already in your city — look for these pairings.
  • When you can't (or don't want to) take more actions, recall your workers and advance to the next season, gaining new workers and seasonal bonuses.
  • Cards in your city grant points, abilities and resources; you may build up to fifteen cards, so each slot matters.
  • Game end: Once all players have passed through autumn into the final winter, tally points from cards, events and bonuses — the most prosperous city wins.

Strategy

  • Early on, prioritise getting resources flowing: cards that produce twigs, resin, pebbles or berries each season pay off over the whole game.
  • Build Constructions that let you play their matching Critters for free — this saves resources and actions, which are both scarce.
  • Workers are limited, especially in the early seasons, so don't waste placements; claim contested locations before opponents do.
  • Watch your season timing: advancing early can grab fresh locations first, but passing too soon may strand unspent resources or unplayed cards.
  • Aim for a rough plan for your fifteen city slots rather than playing every cheap card — a crowded city of low-value cards limits your scoring late on.
  • Keep an eye on events and bonus objectives if available, and shape your builds towards them when they fit naturally.
  • Stay flexible: card draws vary each game, so adapt to what you see rather than forcing a single combo.
