Escape Room: The Game plays with 3–5 players aged 16 and up, with each scenario lasting about an hour. Complexity is medium-light: the rules are minimal, but the brain-bending puzzles demand teamwork, creativity and sharp attention to detail, with each adventure tougher than the last.

First released in 2016 by Dutch publisher Identity Games, the game brought the thrill of live escape-room venues to the tabletop, pairing its electronic Chrono Decoder — complete with countdown timer and sound effects — with a free companion app that adds a cinematic soundtrack. This base game packs four adventures, each in three parts, and once you've beaten them all the challenge continues with separately sold expansion packs that reuse the decoder.

History

First released in 2016 by Dutch publisher Identity Games, Escape Room: The Game translated the booming live escape-room phenomenon into an at-home experience, using its signature Chrono Decoder and companion app to deliver countdown pressure and atmosphere. This base game includes four adventures of increasing difficulty, and a range of expansion packs (sold separately) extends the challenge using the same decoder and keys.

Rules of Escape Room - The Game

  • Set up: For 3–5 players, pick one of the four adventures, read its introduction, and keep later parts closed until you earn them.
  • Start the clock: Set the Chrono Decoder for 60 minutes; the optional app soundtrack adds atmosphere but the decoder is the timer that matters.
  • Play cooperatively: There are no formal turns—everyone examines the current materials, shares finds and works the riddles together.
  • Advance: Solve the current part to identify the correct keys, then enter them into the Chrono Decoder; proceed to the next part only when it confirms the solution.
  • Use time wisely: The countdown keeps running while you debate, so avoid random key entries and have a teammate verify the logic first.
  • Game end: You escape by completing all three parts before time expires; if the countdown reaches zero first, the scenario is lost.

Strategy

  • Do a quick inventory first: spread out the current materials, group obvious sets, and note anything that looks unused.
  • Say observations out loud; small details are easy to miss, and another player may hold the matching clue.
  • Keep one shared note of symbols, numbers, words and where each came from so deductions stay connected.
  • Split up to search, but regroup before using the decoder and require a second check of the proposed keys.
  • If stuck for more than a few minutes, swap tasks or revisit earlier materials for a clue you have not used yet.
  • Set soft checkpoints, such as aiming to reach the later parts with time in hand, but treat them as guidance rather than a guaranteed path.
  • Do not peek at later parts or solutions; each adventure plays best as a one-time challenge for your group, with expansions reusing the decoder later.

Perfect game for anyone who likes solving puzzles, great that it has multiple games inside, once completed we shared with friends and by the time it comes back to us we forgotten most of the things so it was fun again. Perfect for game nights

Silly game

Way too abstract... The aztec puzzle is just stupidly specific and difficult. Even with the walk through, it makes no sense. Perhaps if you're a clairvoyant, you might do well. Thanks for wasting our time
