Elder Sign is a fast-paced, cooperative dice game of supernatural intrigue for 1 to 8 players, designed by Richard Launius and Kevin Wilson. Suitable for ages 14 and over, games typically run for 60 to 120 minutes, offering a medium-light challenge of cooperative risk management, dice rolling, and variable character powers as investigators race against time in a museum teeming with eldritch horrors.
The Race Against the Ancient One
In 1926, a museum's extensive collection of exotic curios and occult artefacts poses an imminent threat to the barriers between our world and the elder evils lurking between dimensions. Gates to the beyond are leaking open, letting terrifying creatures of increasing strength steal through. To win, a handful of investigators must put their sanity and stamina to the test. Armed with tools, allies, and occult knowledge, they must successfully endure adventures within the museum to locate the eldritch Elder Signs needed to seal the portals forever.
Distinctive Dice and Sanity Mechanics
The core of Elder Sign is its clever, thematic dice mechanic. Players must roll and match specific symbols to complete adventure cards, representing their investigation of the museum's exhibits. Failing an adventure can strip investigators of their sanity and stamina, or advance the doom track. If the countdown mechanism completes before the investigators gather enough Elder Signs, the Ancient One awakens, forcing a desperate, final battle for survival.
Design Heritage
Designed by the creators of the acclaimed Arkham Horror board game, Richard Launius and Kevin Wilson, Elder Sign was developed by Fantasy Flight Games to capture the tension of the Cthulhu Mythos in a streamlined, dice-driven format. Set in 1926, the game evokes the classic Lovecraftian struggle against impending doom within the tight, atmospheric confines of a museum filled with occult relics.
