About the Game

Dominion: Prosperity drenches your deck in cold, hard cash. A typical game still builds an engine from a shared pool of cards, but now Treasures carry their own abilities, lavishly expensive power cards tempt you to aim higher, and the new Platinum and Colony basic cards push play beyond Gold and Province. For 2–4 players, games run about 30 minutes at medium-light complexity, recommended for ages 13+, with deck building, hand management and card drafting at its core.

Designed by Donald X. Vaccarino and published by Rio Grande Games in 2010, Prosperity is the fourth addition to Dominion. It's an expansion rather than a standalone game, so the base set is required to play. It adds 25 new Kingdom cards plus two new basic cards, with wealth as the central theme: treasures with abilities, cards that interact with treasures, and powerful, expensive cards to conquer your troublesome neighbours in style.

History

Designed by Donald X. Vaccarino and published by Rio Grande Games in 2010, Dominion: Prosperity is the fourth addition to Dominion. It is an expansion rather than a standalone game, requiring the base set, and extends it with 25 new Kingdom cards and two new basic cards — Platinum and Colony — that let players build past Gold and Province.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Dominion - Prosperity

  • This is an expansion, so you need the base Dominion game to play; combine its cards with the 25 new Kingdom cards and 2 new basic cards.
  • Set up the supply as normal with 10 Kingdom card piles, plus the usual Treasure and Victory piles. If any Prosperity Kingdom cards are in play, add the new Platinum and Colony piles.
  • Each player starts with a deck of 7 Coppers and 3 Estates, shuffles, and draws a hand of 5 cards.
  • On your turn, follow the standard three phases: Action (play one Action card), Buy (play Treasures and buy one card), and Clean-up (discard everything and draw 5 new cards).
  • Many new Treasures have abilities beyond producing coins, and expensive power cards can be played when your Actions or Buys allow.
  • Colonies are worth 10 VP but cost 11, so you'll usually need Platinum (worth 5 coins) to afford them.
  • The game ends when the Province pile is empty, the Colony pile is empty (if in use), or any 3 supply piles are empty.
  • When the game ends, players count the Victory points in their full decks; the highest total wins.

Strategy

  • With Platinum and Colony in play, games tend to run longer and richer, so building a strong money-making engine often pays off more than rushing Provinces.
  • Don't ignore the expensive Kingdom cards — a single high-cost power card can anchor your whole deck if you can reach its cost consistently.
  • Thinning your deck early (trashing Coppers and Estates where the Kingdom allows) still helps your good cards come around more often.
  • Treasures with abilities can replace some Action cards, freeing up your one Action per turn for cards that draw or grant extra Buys.
  • Watch the Colony and Province piles closely; with 2 players especially, the end can arrive faster than expected.
  • Balance buying Treasure against buying Actions — a deck full of Platinum but no way to use extra Buys wastes potential, and vice versa.
  • Green up (buy Victory cards) a touch later than in base Dominion, since Colony games reward building your economy higher before switching.
  • There's no single guaranteed path to victory, so read the Kingdom cards on the table each game and adapt your plan to what's available.

Great expansion to a great game.

Stuart Franklin

Great expansion to a great game. I am a recent convert to Dominion. There are lots of expansions to choose from and I'm not the kind of person to "catch them all". After quite a bit of research, I chose this and I'm very happy with my decision.

Prosperity is the first expansion that I have bought for my Dominion big box set. Technically Intrigue would be the first one as it game in the big box but this is the first one that I intentionally sought out. The additions of the platinum and province cards alone make it worth it as they expand every game in a significant way. Beyond those cards the additional treasure cards are a blast, like Hoard that is +2 coin and when you buy a victory card get a Gold. Or Tiara that lets you play a treasure twice. Or Quarry that reduces the cost of Action cards by 2 coin. It also has one of my favorite attack cards Charlatan that counts as a gold and gives everyone else a curse while also changing curses to count as a copper as well. Then there is Grand market that is "market" but +2 coin and cannot be bought with copper and kings court that lets you play an action card 3x. This expansion is definitely a must buy for anyone looking to expand their base Dominion game but not wanting to complicate the core mechanics just yet. Prosperity can easily be implemented with new players just learning the mechanics where some of the other expansions complicate it for new players too much.
