About the Game

Step into a dreamlike world of surreal artwork, where every card holds a story waiting to be guessed. In a typical round of Dixit, the storyteller offers a clue — a sentence, word or sound — inspired by one of the six illustrated cards in their hand. Everyone else secretly chooses a card from their own hand that could match, then all the cards are shuffled and revealed. Players vote on which card was the storyteller's, but there's a catch: if the clue is too obvious or too obscure, the storyteller scores nothing.

Dixit plays 3–6 players in around 30 minutes, is light in complexity, and is recommended for ages 8 and up. Notable mechanics include storytelling, voting and hand management.

Published by Libellud, Dixit won the 2010 Spiel des Jahres, Germany's prestigious Game of the Year award. This base game includes 84 cards, and a range of expansions — each with 84 additional cards — can be added for even more variety.

Rules of Dixit

  • Setup: Give each player six cards, a voting token set and a scoring rabbit; place the remaining cards as a draw deck.
  • Each round, one player is the storyteller. They pick a card from their hand and give a clue — a word, sentence or sound — without revealing the card.
  • Every other player secretly chooses a card from their own hand that could also match the clue.
  • All submitted cards are shuffled and revealed face up.
  • Non-storytellers vote on which card they think was the storyteller's; votes are revealed together.
  • Scoring: If everyone or no one finds the storyteller's card, the storyteller scores 0 and everyone else scores 2. Otherwise, the storyteller and correct guessers score 3, and players earn 1 point per vote their own card received.
  • Everyone draws back up to six cards, and the storyteller role passes to the next player.
  • The game ends when the draw deck runs out; the player with the most points wins.

Strategy

  • Aim for clues that are ambiguous but fair — too obvious or too obscure and you score nothing as storyteller.
  • Tailor clues to what this group knows: shared references are easier to pitch at the right difficulty.
  • Consider clues that fit your card plus a plausible decoy already on the table, splitting votes safely.
  • When you're not the storyteller, play a card that genuinely fits the clue — votes on your card earn you points.
  • Vote with the group's habits in mind; players often have recognisable styles of card choice.
  • Don't waste your most evocative cards early; flexible cards help you match a wider range of future clues.
  • Pay attention to which images draw votes — it helps you judge how literal or abstract the table prefers clues to be.

Kids can play but younger ones might struggle with the clue giving. Be warned though. You'll want to buy the expansions to enhance the replayability and they aren't cheap unless you source them from non reliable sellers!

Love this game. The artwork is so lovely and creative. Will definitely have to get some expansions too. High quality print and cards. Feels like it’s worth the money, not cheap and flimsy. Hardest part is thinking of phrases or words to play!

I've played this game several times with different groups of people and it has always been a hit. The artwork on the cards is very well done and it is a very easy game to learn to play. All ages can play as well. Basically, everyone has a hand of cards with creative pictures. People take turns giving a hint of what they think their card describes. Next everyone else puts down a card they think matches the short description. The cards are flipped over and then everyone tries to guess what the think the original card was (the one put down by the person giving the short clue/description). It's great for game nights because it is very easy to learn, has a bit of competition to it without being over the top, and it uses a creative side that a lot of games don't use. I love this game!!
