A Galactic Head-to-Head Clash

In this competitive race, two alien species battle for planetary control to prove themselves worthy of joining the Cosmic Citizenship Council. With twenty spaceships at your disposal, you must conquer and hold five planets. As long as you have a ship on a planet, you claim control—even if you must share that control with your opponent. Deploy your fleet strategically to fight in duels, offer reinforcements, or pull back in a tactful retreat, but beware of losing your ships to the Warp.

Devious Aliens and Secret Tactics

The game features twenty-seven unique alien species, each equipped with its own rule-breaking special abilities that shake up the core gameplay. You might play as the Cheater, reserving extra hidden tactics, or other classic archetypes. Each turn, players draw Destiny cards—including Discovery, Event, and Refresh cards—to trigger battles, resolve space disasters, or recover lost ships. Duels are resolved through secret ship allocation, hiring friendly envoys, and playing card tactics face-down to bluff or blast your rival.

History and Differences

Based on the classic 1977 multiplayer board game Cosmic Encounter originally designed by Future Pastimes, this standalone spin-off is published by Fantasy Flight Games. It brings the iconic alien-power battles to a dedicated head-to-head format, adapting a system known for negotiation into a tense, two-player duel.

Unlike the multiplayer original which relies heavily on table negotiation and shifting alliances, Cosmic Encounter Duel is specifically optimised for a two-player dynamic. By introducing secret bidding, tactical card play, and unique Destiny card decks, it preserves the chaotic, variable feel of its predecessor while providing a focused, competitive duel.
