In Cosmic Encounter, players lead unique alien civilisations in a bid to dominate the galaxy. Designed for 3 to 5 players, this legendary strategy game plays in 60 to 120 minutes, is recommended for ages 12 and up, and features a medium level of complexity. Through diplomacy, cunning, and raw starship power, players negotiate alliances and wage battles to establish five colonies outside their home systems.
What Makes Play Distinctive
At the heart of the game are dozens of unique alien races, each possessing a distinct power that intentionally breaks a fundamental rule of play. On each turn, an offensive player launches starships through a hyperspace gate to encounter an opponent on a target planet. Both sides can invite allies to join the conflict, leading to tense negotiations, bluffing, and double-crossing. Because alliances are a central mechanism, multiple players can even share victory by establishing their fifth colonies simultaneously.
A Brief History
First designed by Peter Olotka, Jack Kittredge, Bill Eberle, and Bill Norton (collectively known as Future Pastimes) and released in 1977, Cosmic Encounter is widely regarded as a milestone in game design. It pioneered the asymmetric player power mechanic and was inducted into the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame in 1997. Over the decades, it has been published in multiple editions, cementing its reputation as a premier social strategy game.
Related Editions
While the classic Cosmic Encounter is built for larger, highly social groups of three or more players, its spin-off, Cosmic Encounter Duel, offers a focused head-to-head experience designed specifically for two players.
