Codenames Pictures is a clever, fast-paced party game of deduction and clues for 2–8 players, aged 10 and up. In this visual twist on the smash-hit original, two rival spymasters give one-word clues to help their teammates identify secret agents hidden behind whimsical, multi-layered images. Playable in about 15 minutes, this light and engaging social game challenges teams to communicate creatively while avoiding enemy contacts and the dreaded assassin.

How It Plays

In Codenames Pictures, two teams compete to contact all of their secret agents first. A grid of cards depicting unusual, dreamlike illustrations is laid out on the table. Each team has a spymaster who knows which images belong to their team, which are neutral, and which card represents the deadly assassin. Spymasters take turns giving a one-word clue paired with a number, indicating how many pictures on the grid relate to that clue. Operatives must discuss and decode the hint, pointing to the cards they think match. Selecting correctly advances the team, but pointing to an enemy agent aids the opposition, and choosing the assassin results in an instant defeat.

The Visual Twist

Unlike the original Codenames, which relies on single text words, Codenames Pictures features illustrations that blend multiple distinct concepts into one image. For example, a picture might combine an astronaut with a garden hose, or a castle with a slice of cake. This visual approach shifts the gameplay from linguistic wordplay to abstract association, allowing for broader interpretations and making the game highly accessible across language barriers and mixed-age groups.
