More settlers mean fiercer competition for the island's best ground. With the Catan 5-6 Player Extension, up to six rivals race to claim productive hexes, gather resources and trade shrewdly, pushing roads and settlements across an increasingly crowded island in the race to ten victory points.

This extension seats 5–6 players (the Catan base game is required), plays in roughly 60–120 minutes, and suits ages 10 and up at a medium-light complexity. Notable mechanics include dice rolling, open trading, route building and set collection on a modular hex board, with a between-turns building phase keeping larger groups involved.

Designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany by Kosmos in 1995, Catan — formerly The Settlers of Catan — was among the first Eurogames to win worldwide popularity. This is an extension, not a standalone game: it adds the extra terrain, pieces and cards for two more players and stays compatible with other Catan expansions used with the base game.

History

Catan was designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany by Franckh-Kosmos Verlag (Kosmos) in 1995. Previously known as The Settlers of Catan, it became one of the first Eurogames to achieve popularity outside Europe, with more than 32 million boxed sets sold in 40 languages as of 2020.

The 5-6 Player Extension is an add-on rather than a standalone title: it requires the Catan base game, supplies the components for two additional players, and remains compatible with other Catan expansions when the base game is used.

Rules of Catan 5-6 Player Extension 5th Edition

  • Setup: This extension requires the Catan base game. Add the extra terrain hexes, number tokens, cards and pieces to build a larger island for 5–6 players. Each player takes a colour, then places two settlements with adjoining roads, collecting starting resources from the hexes beside their second settlement.
  • Production: On your turn, roll both dice. Every player collects resources from hexes showing that number that touch their settlements or cities, unless the robber is sitting on that hex.
  • Rolling a 7: Anyone holding more than seven resource cards discards half (rounded down). Move the robber to a new hex, blocking its production, and steal one random card from a player with a piece beside it.
  • Trade and build: Trade resources openly with other players, or use maritime trade (4:1, or better with ports). Then spend resources on roads, new settlements, city upgrades or development cards.
  • Special building phase: After your turn ends, each other player in turn order may build with the cards in their hand, keeping larger groups involved between turns.
  • Objective: Race to 10 victory points from settlements (1 point), cities (2 points), Longest Road, Largest Army and victory-point development cards.
  • Game end: The first player to reach 10 victory points during their own turn wins immediately.

Strategy

  • Placement is everything: Put your opening settlements on intersections touching high-probability numbers (6s and 8s especially) and a spread of different resources.
  • Plan for a crowded island: With five or six rivals, prime intersections vanish fast, so aim your starting roads toward open territory and secure key expansion spots early.
  • Balance your economy: Brick and lumber drive early road and settlement growth, while ore and wheat become crucial for upgrading to cities later.
  • Use the special building phase: Spending spare resources between turns shrinks your hand, reducing what you lose when a 7 is rolled — with more dice rolls per round, that risk adds up.
  • Trade every turn: Open trading keeps your build options moving, and settling a matching 2:1 port can cover a resource your hexes lack.
  • Don't feed the leader: Avoid generous trades with whoever is nearest to ten points, and use the robber to slow their best hexes.
  • Development cards are a gamble: Buy them with spare ore, wheat and sheep, but don't chase them at the cost of visible points on the board.
