About the Game

Every game of Catan plays out on a freshly assembled island of hexagonal terrain, where dice rolls decide which resources — wood, brick, ore, wheat and sheep — the island produces. Players race to build settlements, cities and roads, trading with rivals and through ports to gather what they need, while a rolled seven sends the robber to block production and steal cards. First to ten victory points wins.

Catan suits 3–4 players aged 10+, plays in roughly 60–120 minutes, and sits at medium-light complexity. Notable mechanics include dice rolling, trading, route building and set collection on a modular board.

Designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany by KOSMOS in 1995, Catan became one of the first Eurogames to achieve worldwide popularity. Long known in English as The Settlers of Catan, it was formally renamed Catan in 2015 to serve as the core game of the Catan series — the gameplay remains the beloved classic.

History

Designed by Klaus Teuber, Catan was first published in Germany by Franckh-Kosmos Verlag (KOSMOS) in 1995 as Die Siedler von Catan. It became one of the first Eurogames to achieve popularity beyond Europe, with more than 32 million copies sold in 40 languages as of 2020.

Long published in English as The Settlers of Catan, the game was formally renamed Catan in 2015 to stand as the core and base game of the wider Catan series, which now includes numerous expansions and spin-offs.

Rules of Catan

  • Setup: Assemble the island from the terrain hexes, place the number tokens on each hex, and give every player their settlements, cities and roads.
  • Each player places two settlements with a road each; the second settlement grants its adjacent resources as a starting hand.
  • Turn flow: Roll both dice — every hex showing that number produces its resource for players with settlements or cities beside it.
  • After rolling, trade resources freely with other players, or use ports and the 4:1 bank rate.
  • Spend resources to build roads, new settlements, upgrade settlements to cities, or buy development cards.
  • Rolling a 7 activates the robber: players holding too many cards discard half, then move the robber to block a hex and steal a card from a neighbouring player.
  • Objective: Earn victory points from settlements, cities, and bonuses such as longest road.
  • The game ends immediately when a player reaches 10 victory points on their turn — that player wins.

Strategy

  • Place your first settlements beside hexes with high-probability numbers — 6s and 8s produce most often, so check the dots on the number tokens.
  • Aim to cover a spread of all five resources rather than doubling up on one or two.
  • Wood and brick fuel early road and settlement expansion, while ore and wheat become vital for upgrading to cities later.
  • Expand early towards open intersections or a useful port before rivals cut off your best routes.
  • Trade actively — fair trades that help you now usually beat waiting for perfect dice rolls, even if an opponent benefits too.
  • Avoid hoarding cards; a rolled 7 can force you to discard half your hand, so spend or trade surplus resources.
  • Upgrading a well-placed settlement to a city doubles its production and is often stronger than spreading thin.
  • Keep an eye on longest road and development cards — these bonus points can quietly decide a close game.

Poor quality

Delivered with no Amazon box. Left in our concrete driveway exposed for everyone to see or take. Stickers all over it “fragile”, bar codes, couldn’t take them off. No plastic covering. Definitely not an option for a gift!!. Poor quality for $64!!!

The rules are simple to learn but there is enough depth to keep every game feeling different. The core gameplay focuses on gathering resources, trading with other players, and building roads and settlements to expand your presence on the island. The trading system is what really brings the game to life. It creates plenty of fun interactions and keeps everyone engaged throughout. The components are good quality and the modular board setup means no two games feel the same. A typical session takes about an hour, which makes it perfect for an evening game without feeling too long. Catan is designed for three to four players. There is also a separate expansion that allows you to play with five or six players which works very well and keeps the experience just as enjoyable. Overall, Catan is a fantastic entry point into modern board gaming. It offers a satisfying mix of luck and strategy, strong replay value, and a level of social interaction that makes every session memorable. If you enjoy games that reward planning and negotiation, Catan is a great choice for your collection and excellent value for money.
