About the Game

Carcassonne invites players to build a medieval southern French landscape one tile at a time. Draw a tile, match roads to roads and cities to cities, then decide whether to claim a feature with a meeple — a knight in a city, a robber on a road, a monk in a cloister or a farmer in the fields. Completed features score points, but committing your last meeple is always a gamble.

Carcassonne plays 2–5 players in around 30–45 minutes. With light rules and brisk turns, it suits ages 7 and up, blending tile placement and area majority scoring into an accessible yet tactical family game.

Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück in 2000, Carcassonne won the Spiel des Jahres and Deutscher Spiele Preis in 2001. Named after the famed fortified French town, it is the first game in the Carcassonne series and has inspired many expansions and spin-offs.

History

Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück in 2000, Carcassonne is named after the medieval fortified town in southern France. It won both the Spiel des Jahres and the Deutscher Spiele Preis in 2001.

As the first game in the Carcassonne series, it has inspired numerous expansions and spin-offs, and a new edition with updated artwork was released in 2014.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Carcassonne

  • Setup: Place the start tile in the centre, shuffle the remaining tiles into face-down stacks, and give each player their set of meeples, putting one on the zero space of the score track.
  • Take a turn: Draw one tile and place it so all touching edges match — road to road, city to city, field to field.
  • Claim a feature (optional): You may place one meeple on the tile you just placed — a knight in a city, a robber on a road, a monk in a cloister, or a farmer lying in a field — but only if no meeple already occupies that connected feature.
  • Score completed features: When a city or road is finished, or a cloister is surrounded by tiles, its owner scores points and takes their meeple back.
  • Keep your meeples moving: Returned meeples can be reused; meeples on unfinished features stay out until the end, and farmers stay in their field all game.
  • Game end: The game ends when the last tile is placed. Incomplete cities, roads and cloisters score reduced points, and farmers score for each completed city touching their field.
  • Winner: The player with the most points on the score track wins.

Strategy

  • Watch your meeple supply: Committing your last meeple leaves you unable to claim anything new, so try to keep at least one or two free.
  • Prefer quick returns early: Short roads and small cities score less but return your meeple fast, keeping your options open.
  • Value cloisters: A well-placed monk can earn up to 9 points, but don't park one somewhere that may never fill in.
  • Join shared features: Placing tiles that merge your meeple into an opponent's city or road can split or steal its points.
  • Think ahead about farmers: Fields score at game end for each completed city they touch, so a well-placed farmer can swing the result.
  • Block when it helps: A tile that makes an opponent's feature hard to finish can trap their meeple for the rest of the game.
  • Balance risk and reward: Big cities score well but are easy to leave unfinished — weigh each meeple placement against how likely the feature is to complete.

Carcassone is a real classic game. I played it two player which is very enjoyable but one can see it is slightly better suited for 3-4. The set-up time and grasping of rules was very quick and easy. It is a simple game to understand and adds a lot of different elements such as strategy, competition and managing resources but also luck. I think the best thing about it is the quick playtime and replaybility factor. On two-player we have now gotten games down to 30-45 mins. Makes it ideal for a quick passing of the time. I'm sure it would be slightly longer with more players but it is designed as a quick game. Due to picking tiles up at random, each game is completely different! Even though there are common strategies you can't do it exactly the same time twice. Plus we haven't even started playing with the expansions added in this base pack so definitely worth a pick up for casual gaming or introducing it at a party with others.

Having got back into board games this year, years after last being into them when our son was young, we've been buying some of the classics that have come about since then. This one is popular and routinely highly recommended. It's a game based around laying tiles to build a continuous connecting landscape and playing your "meeple" playing pieces to claim terrain features and score points. This comes in a nicely designed box with very solid components, made of of cardboard tiles and wooden "meeple" and feels like real quality. It feels like very good value for money. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, with good examples to get you started. We found ourselves getting out heads around it very quickly. It's a very enjoyable game, engaging yet very relaxing. The design is clever, simple yet with a decent amount of complexity within. This has become one of our most popular games, played between myself and my wife and with friends. We love it, this is one I'd recommend to anybody looking to collect modern classic board games.
