About the Game

The rite has already succeeded, and an Ancient One is tearing through reality above Miskatonic University. In Arkham Horror: Final Hour, one to four investigators race across the campus, cutting down waves of nightmarish creatures while scrambling to gather the ritual components needed to reverse the summoning before time runs out. This fully co-operative game plays in under 60 minutes, suits ages 12 and up, and offers medium-light complexity built around hand management, variable investigator powers and tight coordination. The odds are astronomical, but failure means the final hour for Arkham — and the world.

Part of Fantasy Flight Games' long-running Arkham Horror line — itself based on H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and first published by Chaosium in 1987 — Final Hour is a standalone spin-off rather than an expansion. Where earlier editions sprawl across the town of Arkham over hours of play, it distils the experience into a fast, desperate last stand on the university grounds.

History

The Arkham Horror line began as a co-operative adventure game designed by Richard Launius and first published by Chaosium in 1987, drawing on Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game and the Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft. Fantasy Flight Games released a second edition in 2005 and a third in 2018.

Arkham Horror: Final Hour is a later standalone instalment from Fantasy Flight Games rather than an expansion, condensing the setting's cosmic horror into a single fast-playing battle.

Watch: How to play

Rules of Arkham Horror - Final Hour

  • Players: One to four investigators, fully co-operative — you all win or lose together.
  • Setup: Each player chooses an investigator with a unique ability and takes their cards; set out the Miskatonic University board, the Ancient One and the starting monsters as directed.
  • Objective: Race across the campus to gather the ritual components needed to reverse the summoning before time runs out.
  • Your turn: Play cards from your hand, choosing which of each card's effects to use — typically to move, fight monsters or collect components.
  • Rising threat: After the investigators act, more monsters spawn and the Ancient One's arrival advances, so the pressure builds every round.
  • Game end: Complete the ritual in time and the team wins; if the Ancient One fully breaks through or time expires, everyone loses.

Strategy

  • Talk before committing: The game is fully co-operative, so agree on a rough plan each round before anyone plays cards.
  • Prioritise the ritual: Killing monsters feels productive, but gathering components is what actually wins the game.
  • Lean on your powers: Each investigator's unique ability is a real asset — build the team's plan around complementary strengths.
  • Read every card fully: Cards offer a choice of effects, so check all options before deciding how to use each one.
  • Fight with purpose: Clear the monsters blocking key routes or objectives rather than trying to wipe out everything on the board.
  • Watch the clock: Keep an eye on the Ancient One's progress and start positioning for the final push a round or two early.

An interesting game that is good for an hour or two. Very easy to setup and play solo as well as tweak the rules to make it a little easier when playing with friends. Fully cooperative and no real competitive element except to see if you can 'beat the system'. Minimal thematic/roleplaying elements unlike some other Arkham Horror games and is very much focused on the mechanics.. if you're into the crunchier side of things this can be a fun evening or two before it ends up in the dustier side of the shelf (but super easy to pick up and play again down the track).

This is a great Lovecraftian based game. It's card based, being what Fantasy Flight terms an LCG or living card game. That means you get all the cards for an expansion in a boxed set, rather than having to fool around with buying booster packs of random cards and hoping for what you want, or purchasing overpriced single cards from online gougers (like with a collectible card game). The play sequence is a bit odd and takes some getting used to but isn't overly difficult or too complex. That being said it should go without saying that this isn't a kids' game, dealing with themes like interdimensional horror, insanity, and alien monsters who are hell-bent on destroying as many humans as possible. Overall it's a great homage to the Lovecraftian mythos and has the appropriate creepy vibes, weirdness, and even a sense of frenzied urgency to its play style that one would expect when playing a lone character attempting to single-handedly save the world from an invasion of horrific interdimensional monstrosities. It is also one in a long line of expansions to FFG's original Arkham Horror game, so if you like this one there are plenty more expansions out there. Highly recommended for dedicated Lovecraft fans or those who just like creepy, weird cosmic horror themes.

Love the Arkham Horror games and this one works really well solo I think. Haven't managed to beat it yet but it's all a learning curve !
