About the Game

In Agricola (Revised Edition), you guide a 17th-century farming family from a humble hut to a thriving homestead. Each round you send family members out to gather wood, plough fields, sow grain and vegetables, build fences and raise sheep, wild boar and cattle — all while scrambling to harvest enough food. Growing your family unlocks extra actions, but more mouths make every harvest tighter.

The game supports 1–4 players, aged 12 and up, with a typical play time of about 30 minutes per player and medium-heavy complexity. Notable mechanics include worker placement, resource management and hand management, with occupation and improvement cards giving every session fresh shape.

Designed by Uwe Rosenberg and first released in 2007, Agricola won the Spiel des Jahres special award for Best Complex Game in 2008. This revised edition streamlines the rules, upgrades to all-wood components and curates cards from the base game and its expansions, updated for this release.

Rules of Agricola (Revised Edition)

Setup: Give each player a farm board, two family members and a wooden hut, then deal a hand of occupation and minor improvement cards. Place the round and action cards for the game's 14 rounds.
Each round: Reveal one new action space, then players take turns placing one family member at a time on an action space until everyone is placed — each space can hold only one worker.
Actions let you gather wood, clay, reed and stone, plough and sow fields, build fences, collect animals, renovate your hut, grow your family or take food.
Family growth adds an extra worker (and action) each round, but every new mouth must be fed at harvest.
Harvests occur at set points: reap crops from your fields, feed each family member (two food each), then breed pairs of animals.
Feeding shortfall: Any family member you cannot feed earns you a begging card, which costs points.
Game end: After the round 14 harvest, score points for fields, pastures, animals, family size and house quality — unused farm spaces and empty categories lose points. Highest score wins.

Strategy

Secure food early. Grabbing the fishing spot, a cooking improvement or a reliable grain supply stops the harvest scramble from dictating your whole game.
Sow sooner rather than later. Grain and vegetables multiply at harvest, so an early ploughed field pays off many times over.
Time family growth carefully. An extra worker is powerful, but expand your hut first and make sure you can feed the extra mouth.
Don't ignore animals. Even a small fenced pasture with a breeding pair is a steady source of points and food.
Cover the scoring categories. A little of everything — fields, pastures, each animal type — avoids the minus points for empty categories.
Watch the other players. Popular action spaces get blocked, so take critical resources (like wood for fences) before you desperately need them.
Play to your cards. Occupations and improvements that suit your plan are worth playing early; don't feel obliged to use every card in your hand.

My son who is now 10 and I play a lot of board games. We go to a club with hundreds of games and try a few a day. I must say that Agricola is probably my favorite one. It is a competitive game but much less frustrating for the people who did not get the highest score. By the end of the game even if you took the last place you can still have a beautiful developed farm. In this game I generally do not care to beat others but rather I aspire to beat my previous score. It is pretty much like real life. You do not have to have the most successful businesses. You can just have a successful business and do great. Of course you need to work with the constraints of supply, cash flows, etc. However the game has enough flexibility for each player to have their own successful strategy that does not collide with other player’s goals. I think this game can be played in a partially collaborative fashion where people agree not to step on each other’s feet but rather use the resources in the most efficient way. This way everyone can get the top score.

Es macht unheimlich Spaß, nicht zuletzt wegen der liebevollen Gestaltung der Holzteile (Tiere, Gemüse, Rohstoffe ...). Aber auch die verschiedenen Strategien und Herangehensweisen um das Ziel zu erreichen machen das Spiel vielseitig und machen in fast jedem Alter Spaß. Wir haben es in einer Runde aus Mitspielern von 11 über 28, 32 bis 60 Jahren gespielt und es hat super viel Spaß gemacht.
